Description

Trinovantes and Catuvellauni, Cunobelin (c. AD 9‑40) Gold Stater, ‘Biga’ type, Camulodunum (Colchester), 5.60g. Obverse: CAMVL, on panel with beaded edges over wreath, ring pellet to right. Rev. Biga galloping left, leaf above, wheel below, panel below with inscription. (ABC 2771; Sills 547). Extremely Fine. Very Rare. Ex. DNW Sale 114 (18/09/2013) lot #1276. The earliest issue of this Iron Age king, the ‘Cunobelinus Biga’ type’s design is, according to Sills, likely derived from a Roman Republican quadrigatus or silver denarius. The vine leaf above the horses is a known emblem of the Trinovantes, and this symbolism confirms the unification of two great Iron Age tribes
