Description
Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Penny, Trefoil quadrilateral type (c.1046-48), Lincoln Mint, moneyer Aelfnoth, diademed bust left with sceptre, bust to bottom of coin, legend commences at 12 o’clock +EDPERD REX X. Rev, quadrilateral ornament with three pellets in each angle, short voided cross, within linear circle, legend reads +ÆLNOÐ LINCOLNE, 1.14g (S.1174; N.817; BMC III; Mossop, plate LXIX, 27; SCBI 9 [Oxford] 780).
Executed on a larger flan than usual with a wave at 10 o’clock, toned in a light grey green patina, all the major details in place, portrait excellent, legend inscriptions on both sides comprehensible. Some peckmarks, mainly on reverse, with an in house auction provenance from the late 1990s. Comprehensive very fine, well struck.
