Description

Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Penny, Pointed helmet type (1053-56), Winchester mint, moneyer Godwine Widia, King right draped wearing helmet, holding lis headed sceptre, legend surrounds +EDPERD REX. Rev, annulet at centre of cross with tri-crescent ends within inner linear circle, reads +GODPINE PIDIA ONPIN, 1.32g (S.1179; N.825; BMC VII).

Struck on a broad flan, excellent portrait, some flatness in the legends, nevertheless key areas legible, the type becoming harder to source both at auction or in dealers trays. A nice rendition of Godwine Pidia. Some legend weakness, otherwise very fine.

Ex. Dr R J Eaglen, ‘Baldwin’s Auction 18, 12th October 1998, lot 1582
