Description
North, J. J. English Hammered Coinage. Volume 1. Anglo-Saxon to Henry III c. A.D. 600-1272. Third Edition, London, 1994. 320 pages, 20 plates. Casebound, jacket, rarity guide.
The first of a two-volume set attempting to list every known type of coin struck in England from early Saxon times until the end of the hammered coinage in the reign of Charles II. Minor varieties and overstruck initial marks are normally omitted, as are mules except where no true coin is known of the type or the initial mark represented by the obverse or reverse. In addition to the lists of coins, notes have been added to facilitate the identification of types in the more complicated series. An absolute essential for anyone with an interest in hammered coinage.
