Description
George I (1714-27), Guinea, 1717, fourth laureate head right, toothed outer border surrounding both sides, legend surrounds from bottom left GEORGIVS DG M BR FR ET HIB. REX FD. Rev, crowned cruciform shields, including the the Arms of Hanover, ornamental sceptres in angles, garter star with sunburst at centre, date flanking top crown, reads BRVN ET. L. DVX S.R.I.A.TH ET. EL (S.3631; Schneider 547; EGC.507; MCE 249).
Rich golden tone, retaining a large proportion of its original mint lustre and bloom, reflective fields both sides. Some trivial surface markings, a die break running though part of the legends; the Kings portrait and overall execution in both his hair and expression superb, few carbon streaks and unobtrusive nicks in the chin region. Rev, some distortion in the top coat of arms, otherwise excellent. Encapsulated and graded by NGC as Mint State 63, the finest specimen certified by NGC, a scarcer date.
