Description
George III (1760-1820), Pattern for a gold coinage, 1781, struck in copper on a 22mm flan, engraved by Thomas Pingo, laureate head right of the fourth bust style, legend reads same as currency guinea but surrounds bust design more, rev inverted die axis, crowned quartered shield of arms, date either side of crown, legend as gold coinage, edge, plain, 3.41g (cf.Eimer 76; Selig -).
Green spot by nose, toned good very fine and a little softly struck, extremely rare with the plain edge.
The Eimer reference is ”The Pingo Family & Medal Making in 18th Century Britain” where this coin is recorded as a pattern for a gold coinage and with either grained or lettered edge. This is very similar in design to the fourth bust type George III gold coins of 1774-86.
