Description

Germany, Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, August the Younger (1635-1666), silver Taler, struck c. 1650, Zellerfeld, draped bust facing slightly to right. Rev. Figure standing on shore looking towards the two ships, 29.04g (Dav. 6357A; Welt. 804A). In NGC holder graded AU 58 (6931163-001). The finest known in NGC census. This so-called ‘Travel Taler’ depicts a naval scene and it is sometimes called ‘Schiffstaler’ (Ship Taler). The Duke August was very well traveled man who spent several years visiting Italy, France and England early in his life. It is inferred that these coins were struck to commemorate those travels.
