The Ghorid dynasty, based in the central Afghan region of Ghur, became an independent power in the 12th century AD. Their first coinage, struck in 1170s, such as this coin are popularly known as the ‘bullseye’ type and were modelled on the contemporary Ayyubid coinage of Egypt. Its legends were arranged in concentric circles with the brother-rulers common name, Muhammad ibn Sam, in the centre. It is not known why this coin design style was abandoned but it may have been for the sake of greater legibility.
