Description

Greece, Ionian Islands, Lord High Commissioner Howard Douglas, Silver Medal (37.5mm/23.25gm) of Merit for Artistic Achievement 1841. Owl in laurel wreath, legend surrounds. Rev, inscription in wreath. Edge, plain with original eyelet (Chatziotis Fig. 29). Good Very Fine or better, toned, of the greatest rarity and not seen on the market since 2006.

Howard Douglas, who is mentioned on the reverse, was the English Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands from 1835 to 1840 and probably donated this prize, or rather the prize money, even though the medal dates one year after his retirement. This medal, which is apparently better preserved than the one published in the reference, shows on the obverse the tiny signature II.AAMD.
