Harold I (1035-1040), Penny, Jewel Cross type (c.1036-1038), Canterbury mint, moneyer Cytel, diademed bust left, legend surrounds, +HAROLD RE. Rev, cross of four ovals united by concentric circles with a central pellet, legend reads + CYTEL ON CENTP, 0.92g (S.1163; N.802; BMC I; SCBI 40 – 145, Plate 6).
A rare moneyer, derived from the branch Scandinavian name Ketill, also common in Normandy; first emerging on an English coin for Eadwig (955-959), in its anglicised form of Cytel. Some die striations and metal stress leading to flan cracks. Otherwise struck on a full flan, toned, displaying all the main motifs on the type. Very fine, rare
