Description

Henry VIII (1509-1547) Halfgroat ,Second coinage, Canterbury mint, under the administration of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, initial mark Catherine wheel/-. struck circa 1533-1534. Crowned bust facing right legend surrounds. Rev,coat-of-arms over long cross fourchée; T-C flanking shield (N.1804; S.2345). Toned, good very fine, hairline die breaks on obverse.

Cranmer received a letter in October of 1532, while in Italy in his capacity as the resident ambassador to the court of the Holy Roman Emperor. The letter announced to him that he had been appointed the new Archbishop of Canterbury, following the death of archbishop William Warham, and was to return to England swiftly.
