India General Service Medal 1854-95, one clasp, Jowaki 1877-8 awarded to Private, later Corporal, James Turnbull 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade, (914 Pte James Turnbull. 4 Bn. Rifle Bde.), extremely fine
James Turnbull enlisted into the Lanarkshire Militia on the 13th of July 1858, a 20 year old clerk from Stirlingshire and who enlisted into the Rifle Brigade on the 25th of August 1858, he served Home 30th of August 1858 to the 3rd of January 1859, Malta 4th of January 1859 to the 20th of September 1863, Gibraltar from the 21st of September 1863 to the 7th of July 1865, Canada 8th of July 1865 to the 18th of September 1867, Home 19th of September 1867 to the 20th of October 1873, India 21st of October 1873 to the 21st of May1880, Home 22nd of May 1880 to the 8th of December 1881, a total of 22 year 236 days with the Colours. His papers state – General Remarks – Good, Latterly Very Temperate, however his papers show that he was tried at least 13 times, presumably for drunkenness. His papers state he has the Medals for Afghanistan and Jowaki, Medal Roll confirms Jowaki clasp. After discharge he claimed for and received a Pension from Chelsea.
