A Chitral Relief Expedition India Medal awarded to Private James Conroy 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment comprising India Medal 1895-1902, WVR, one clasp, Relief of Chitral, (3011 Pte J. Conroy 1st Bn. E. Lanc: Regt.), named in running script, very lightly toned, very fine.

James Conway, an 18 year old General Labourer from Dublin, joined the East Lancashire Regiment at Burnley on the 25th of September 1890, stating that he had previously served with the 4th Battalion Dublin Fusiliers. He Served at Home, India, Burma and was Transferred to the Reserve on the 19th of December 1897 being re-called to Army Service on the 18th of December 1899 being posted to South Africa on the 13th of January 1900.

His papers state that he participated in the Chitral Relief Expedition of 1890 and served in South Africa in 1900 and 1901. Being awarded the India Medal 1895 with the clasp Relief of Chitral, the Queen’s South Africa Medal with the clasps, Johannesburg, Cape Colony and Orange Free State and the King’s South Africa Medal with South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. He was finally discharged from the Army on the termination of his period of engagement on the 21st of September 1902.
