Description
James II (1685-88), Two Guineas, 1687, laureate head left, latin legend and toothed border surrounding, IACOBVS II DEI GRATIA. Rev, crowned cruciform shields, emblematic sceptres in angles, eight harp strings, legend reads MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX, (S.3399; Schneider 454; MCE 121; EGC.318: Rare). Choice mint state, exceptional. A proof like specimen. Conservatively graded by PCGS as MS63.
Extremely Rare in any Mint State preservation; one of only three examples certified in as such by either PCGS or NGC, and beaten only by a single example in the
PCGS census, in MS‑64. It could be argued that this is a superior example with a stronger strike. Two guineas seem very undervalued in comparison to their five
guinea counterparts in the current marketplace, therefore making them seem a very attractive prospect. An equivalent James II five guinea in MS63 condition
would fetch between £150,000-£200,000 in auction.
