Description

A Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, GVR, awarded to 2nd Lieutenant William Francis, 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers and Labour Corps, (6169 C.Sjt: W. Francis. R. Fus.), toned very fine.

William Francis was born in 1870 he joined the Army on the 3rd December 1888, aged a8 years old, I have been unable to find when he was discharged, I suspect that he left after 1922 and his Officer’s Service papers are still held by the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow, however certainly over 30 years-service would seem likely.

He served in Malta, Gibraltar, Egypt, and Bermuda and landed in France with the BEF on the 6th January 1915 as a Serjeant Major with the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he had already received his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal when he went to France this having been awarded in the Army Order of October 1914. He was Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on the 18th August 1917 into the Labour Corps. He is entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio and a Silver War Badge.

Sold with copy service papers and copy Medal Index Card.
