Description
Great Britain, Middlesex (London), Skidmore (established by John Skidmore, c.1748-1823, furnisher and stove-plate maker with businesses in Clerkenwell and High Holborn, and later token issuer with his sons), Copper Halfpenny Trade Token mule, dated 1793, obverse: register stove, “No.123 HIGH HOLBORN LONDON” around square edges, PAYABLE AT SKIDMORES FURNISHING REPOSITORY around in outside border, reverse: bust of William Hallan left, WILLIAM HALLAN BIRMINGHAM around (William Hallan, dealer in China and Staffordshire ware, also ran a “registry office” or employment exchange for servants), date below, edge plain, diam. 28mm (Dalton & Hamer “The Provincial Token Coinage of the 18th Century” 484b).
Good extremely fine with a little original colour remaining, struck on a very thin flan thus not fully struck up, circular flan polish still evident, of the highest rarity, this the only example recorded.
