Nero (AD 54-68)
Gold Aureus, mint of Rome, c. 65-66.
Obverse: NERO CAESAR – AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Nero facing right.
Reverse: VESTA, domed hexastyle temple of Vesta, within which sits a statue of Vesta, holding patera and long sceptre.
(C 334. BMC 101. RIC 61, Calico 448).
Very Fine. Rare. Flan defect and scratch in reverse field.
A pleasing example of this scarce reverse type for Nero, which features as its primary motif, the Temple of Vesta.
