Description

Netherlands, William & Mary (1689-94), silver coronation medal/jeton (32mm/12.41gm) by M. Sonnemaens. Crowned shield bearing the arms of Rotterdam supported by two heraldric lions, band inscribed ROTERODAMUM below; behind, view of the city and harbour of Rotterdam, palm tree in centre. Rev, banquet scene with statue of Erasmus and a specially erected arch, inscribed PRINCIPI PATRIÆ QVE S C and bearing a portrait of William III; in exergue (MII, pp. 678-679, 55. TMNK 05469. Van Loon III, p. 391). Good Very Fine, slight edge bump at 8 o’clock on rev., attractive tone.

All the people present at the banquet, held on 11 April to celebrate William and Mary’s coronation, received one of these jetons, or medalets, as a memento of the event.
