Queen’s South Africa Medal, 1898-1902, 3rd type, no clasp to Cpl W. A. Nellist Rand Rifles, (28412 Cpl. W. A. Nellist. Rand Rifles.) Impressed naming, very fine.
William Arthur Nellist was born on 24th July 1872 in Middleborough, Yorkshire, and then emigrated to South Africa where he worked as an accountant and officer manager. With the outbreak of the Boer War he enlisted into the South African Colonial Forces and saw service as a Corporal (No.28412) with the Rand Rifles. Having married Clara Jackson, of Camborne, Cornwall, the couple had their first child in Johannesburg in 1906, but their two further children, where born in Camborne, Cornwall, in 1907 and 1916 respectively. Meanwhile in 1911, Nellist had been appointed the secretary of the South African and General Investment and Trust Company. He was still travelling to and from South Africa till 1930.
