Description
A Talana, Defence of Ladysmith Queen’s South Africa Medal awarded to Private/Drummer Augustus Jacques, 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, comprising Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2nd type, ghost dates, two clasps, Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, (4708 Pte A. Jacques. 1: Leic: Regt), impressed naming, toned, very fine.
Augustus Jacques enlisted into the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment on the 3rd of July 1896, stating that he was a 19 year old Clerk who was currently serving in the 3rd Battalion Derby Regiment of the Militia. He served Home 3rd July 1896 to the 23rd December 1898, Africa 24th December 1898 to the 25th of September 1900, Home 26th September 1900 to the 3rd of February 1901, Egypt 4th of February 1901 to the 14th of December 1902, Home 15th December 1902 to the 20th of September 1906, India 21st September 1906 to the 16th of November 1909 when he was invalided Home, Home as an Invalid 7th November 1909 to 28th December 1909 when he was Discharged, Medically unfit for further service after serving 13 years 170 days with the Colours.
His Papers state the he was appointed Drummer 12th June 1899. His papers further state his only Medal a South Africa Medal with two clasps. The Medal Roll confirms the two clasps, Talana and Defence of Ladysmith.
