Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2nd type, ghost dates, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Paarderberg, Transvaal, awarded to Private, later Temporary Quarter & Lieutenant Alfred George Turpin Royal Army Medical Corps, who was Commended in 1918 by the Secretary of State for war for “valuable services rendered on the occasion of the sinking or damage by enemy action of Hospital Ships, Transports and Store Ships” Queen’s South Africa Medal (12265 Pte. The names of the undermentioned have been brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War for valuable services rendered on the occasion of the sinking or damage by enemy action of Hospital Ships, Transports and Store Ships: –

Turpin, 12265 S.Sgt. (A/S.M.) (now T. Qrmr. and Lt.) A.G. R.A.M.C.)

Alfred George Turpin was born in c. 1880 in St Helen, Jersey, he stated he was a Baker by trade. He attested For the Royal Army Medical Corps in St Helen on the 14th of January 1899 joining for 7 years with the Colours and 5 on the Reserve.

He served Home 28th January 1899 until 4th of January 1900, during which time he broke his left leg, an accident when not on duty. He then served South Africa until the 6th of April 1903. Home 7th April 1903 to the 18th of April 1904 then to Gibraltar 19th of April 1904 to 20th October 1908, in 1906 he extended his Service to 12 years with the Colours. Home until 10th December 1908 then Fermoy 11th December 1908 until 9th October 1910, and then Cork until 22nd of April 1910, Home 23rd April 1910 until 6th of April 1912. On the 18th of November 1912 now a Sergeant he was transferred as an instructor to the London University OTC, on the 8th of August 1914 he re-joined and was to France on the 28th of August 1914. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant on the 20th of January 1915 and Acting Sergeant major on the 28th of June 1915. He was Commissioned on the 26th of June 1918 as Quarter master and Lieutenant RAMC. He was discharged with Silver War Badge No451909 on the 25th of June 1918 after 18 years’ Service.

He is also entitled to the Kings South Africa Medal1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals and a Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal awarded to him on the 1st of November 1917 and the Silver War Badge.
