Richard II (1377-99), Noble of six shillings and eight pence, Type IIIB, armoured King standing in ship with upright sword and quartered shield, lis on rudder, legend surrounds RICΛRD DI GRΛ REX ANGL Z FRΛNC D HIB Z ΛQT. Rev, R at centre of ornate cross with lis terminals, crown over lion in each angle, all within a tressure of eight arcs, fleurs in spandrels, initial mark cross pattée, reads, IHC ΛVTEM TRANSIENS PER MEDIV ILLORVM IBAT, 7.73g (S.1657; N.1303; cf. Schneider 172; Webb Ware dies IIIB : Rare).
An excellent example with a fully centred strike on a symmetrical flan complimented by even lustrous gold toning and clear fields. The King, ship, striations to the waves and especially quartered coat of arms on the shield pleasing. Legends all legible with no apparent weaknesses, struck from a marginally rusty dies which is of often the case for Noble’s in Richards reign, slight fade in some of the ships rigging. Rev, much as struck, the slightest of weakness in the eastern fleur. Graded and encapsulated by NGC as MS62. Good extremely fine, rare.
