Description

St. Edmund memorial (895-910), Penny, Danish East Anglia, Asten moneyer. Large chevron barred A within inner linear circle, legend surrounds +SCEADMVND. Rev, short cross pattée, inside linear circle, reading +ASTEN MONET, M of monet two inverse ligature style N’s, 1.39g (S.960; N.483).

Struck on a compact flan, with legible legends both sides, a rarer moneyer for the series. Asten – perhaps a representation of the old Norse name Hasteinn, cf. BNJ 72 (2002) ‘The St Edmund coinage in the light of a parcel from a hoard of St Edmund Pennies’ – Mark Blackburn and Hugh Pagan, reference 11. Near extremely fine for issue, with the slightest of reverse legend weak spots, well-toned.

Ex Baldwin’s Basement, with a supporting ticket noting the rarity and old BMC catalogue reference of 267a.
