Description

Stephen (1135-54), Penny, Cross Moline (Watford) type (c.1136-45), Leicester mint, moneyer Samar, crowned and diademed bust right, holding sceptre in right hand, annulet above eye, within inner linear circle, legend surrounds +STIEFNE RE. Rev, cross moline, fleur in each angle, reads (S)AMAR –LER 1.14g (S.1278; N.873; BMC 1; Mack. 19a).

Some porosity, a clear portrait, some flatness in legends and weak spots, a far better mint for type, the reverse cross moline precise the moneyers name in full with the exception of the S. Near very fine in the strike, for a notoriously poorly struck issue, much eye appeal, scarce.
