Description
Sweden, lead Jeton, Jupiter standing. Rev. Tabula Iovis, 13.24g. Good Very Fine, graffito on the obverse. No parallels known, apparently unpublished.
The Tabula Iovis (Table of Jupiter) features on this unique lead jeton. Arranged as a four-by-four grid containing the numbers one to sixteen, it is constructed so that each row, column, and diagonal equals thirty-four. The Table of Jupiter is associated with the dispelling of melancholia, an idea most famously utilised by Albrecht Dürer in his engraving Melancholia I, where the table is thought to represent a jovial exercise intended to offset melancholy.
