The Indian Mutiny Medal awarded to Private William Kirby 3rd Battalion The Rifle Brigade who 5 times recoded in the Defaulters Book, once Tried By Court Marshall, reduced to the Ranks from Corporal to Private and who was found unfit for further Military Service after 19 years 142 days with the Colours, 14 years 131 days in India, suffering from acute Rheumatism comprising, Indian Mutiny Medal, 1857-58, one clasp, Lucknow, (Wm. Kirby, 3rd Bn. Rifle Bde), lightly toned very fine.
William Kirby was born in Stroud Gloucester; he attested for the Rifle Brigade on the 30th of March 1855 stating that he was an 18-year-old Labourer. His name is noted as recorded 5 times recoded in the Defaulters Book, and once Tried by Court Marshall, reduced to the Ranks from Corporal to Private and who was found unfit for further Military Service after 19 years 142 days with the Colours, 14 years 131 days in India, suffering from acute Rheumatism. He was Discharged to Pension on the 18th of August 1874. His papers confirm the Indian Mutiny Medal with the clasp Lucknow.
