Description

The Royal Navy Defensivley Equipped Merchant Ships (DEMS) Gunner Casualty Group awarded to Able Seamen George Emmerson Chipperfield who was killed in action on the 4th March 1943 when the Merchant Steam Ship Mariette E was torpedoed by U-160. Comprising 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, 1939-45 War Medal, unnamed as issued, Condolence/Bestowal slip (George E. Chipperfield) and box and packets of issue.

Able Seaman George Emmerson Chipperfield was killed on the 4th March 1943 he was attatched to H.M.S. Predident III, attatched to S.S. Marietta E as a DEMS Gunner. S.S. Maritetta E was part of Convoy DN-21 when she was sunk by U-160, U-160 fired two torpedoes at 03.46 Hrs at the Convoy east-north-east of East London and hit two ships. The Marietta E was sunk and tbe Sheaf Crown damaged. Of the crew of 45 5 were killed, four crew members and one DEMS Gunner. George is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
