Description

The South Africa Medal awarded to Private James Ervine of the 1st Battalion 13th Foot (1st Somersetshire) Prince Albert’s Light Infantry who distinguished themselves at the Battle of Khambula. Comprising South Africa Medal 1877-79, one clasp 1878-9, (36/330 Pte J. Ervine 1/13” Foot.), lighty toned very fine.

James Ervine of Antrim joined the 13th Foot at Belfast on the 28th of January 1875, stating that he was a 20 year old shoemaker. He served Home form the 28th January 1875 to the 18th of March 1876, South Africa from the 19th of May 1876 to the 18th of September 1879 and Home form the 19th of September 1879 to his Discharge on the 17th of June 1884. His papers confirm the award of the South Africa Medal with the clasp 1878-9.
