An interesting World War Two and South East Asia Group to the Royal Air Force Chaplin’s Department awarded to Squadron Leader The Reverend John Northey Oates RAF comprising; 1939-1945 Defence and War Medals, unnamed as issued, General service Medal, 1918-62, one clasp S.E. Asia 1945-46, (Sqn. Ldr. (Rev) J.N.OatesR.A.F.), engraved in RAF style. Mounted on contemporary pin for wear in wrong order otherwise very fine.
John Northey Oates was born in Gateshead on the 13th February 1908, trained for the Clergy at Paton College, Nottingham, and was ordained and inducted at Bakewell, Derbyshire in 12935. He moved to Hanover, Stockport in 1939. In 1942 he was called to serve in the Royal Air Force, being promoted to Squadron Leader in the Chaplains Branch 9 December 1942, he continued to serve until 1959 when he went to Amble where he remained until he retired in 1973. He died on the 31st July 1981 aged 73.
